SIXTEEN
Curled on her side in her big antique bed, Genny felt Jack’s mouth brush the nape of her neck.
“That was so damned good.”
She smiled contentedly. Letting the last warm remnants of their lovemaking drift over her, she sleepily closed her eyes and let him draw her against him. It felt good to have him there. His big male body made her feel small and feminine and oddly protected. But with the graying of dawn, over a steaming cup of coffee, she discovered that he would soon be gone.
“I’ve got to go away for a couple days, baby. I hate to leave when you’re feeling so damned bad, but I’m making a last-ditch effort to get the money we need for the boat. I’ve got some people to see down at the harbor in Long Beach. If there’s any chance at all of saving the Marauder, I’ve got to give it a try.”
“Of course you do. I’ll be fine while you’re gone. Please don’t worry about me.”
But it was obvious he was worried, and the concern on his face gave her hope that it might work out between them.
She thought about the evening they had spent with Charley, discussing her dreams, trying to decide what to do, and debating the possibility of having lived a life in the past. She appreciated Charley’s attempt to help, but the concept of reincarnation was so foreign, so totally out of her realm of experience that she refused to give it any credence.
Of all the things she was willing to consider, a past life wasn’t one of them. It was too farfetched, too remote a possibility. Just too darned scary.
Instead, she focused her attention on the problems she faced with Jack and finding a way to bridge the gap in their lifestyles that always came between them. After careful consideration, an idea occurred that offered at least some hope of a beginning. If she could make it work.
First thing Tuesday morning, she walked behind the reference desk to talk to Millicent Winslow.
“How was your weekend?” Millie asked. A slow smile softened the planes of her narrow face. Today she wore a simple blue suit, with her blond hair pulled back by gold clips at the sides of her face. “Scandalously delicious, I suppose.”
“It definitely had its ups and downs.”
Millie’s eyes widened, and Genny laughed. “The truth is it started out bad, but ended up good. Now, what I really want to talk to you about is the favor I’d like to ask.”
“Are you kidding? I owe you more favors than I can count. Who else but you would be willing to water my overgrown house plants and take care of my parakeet? Last time you even cleaned the bottom of Izzy’s cage.” Millie smiled. She had a very nice smile, Genny thought, wondering why some man couldn’t see that. “So what’s the favor?” Millie asked.
“I know this is going to sound crazy, but I want you to invite me over to your parents’ house.”
“That’s no problem.
